Product Description

The AIR X Marine is the world’s number one selling small wind turbine for Sailboats. The unit incorporates a new microprocessor based technology that results in increased performance, improved battery charging capability, greater reliability and the reduction of “flutter” noise from the machine. The controller allows for peak-power tracking of the wind by optimizing the alternator's output on all points of the cubic curve and efficiently delivers the energy to the battery. The turbine’s smart controller allows it to actually control blade rotation speed thus eliminating the buzzing noise commonly found with most small wind turbines.

Product Details

  • Acid etched castings double coated with marine grade powder coat for superior protection from the environment
  • Tuff-Gel coated fasteners to prevent seizing of components
  • The turbine’s smart controller allows it to actually control blade rotation speed thus eliminating the buzzing noise commonly found with most small wind turbines.
  • High Wind Safe Mode - automatically slows turbine in potentially damaging winds. Reduces noise and distractions for peace-of-mind when on or off your boat
  • Auto-brake feature that slows the AIR to a silent spin when the batteries are charged, thus extending bearing life and eliminating noise

Sunforce 44446 marine 400W wind turbine

That's 400W at a constant 28mph wind. Actual power will vary, but in a sailboat application you should have plenty of apparent windspeed to run this unit. Startup wind speed is 8mph and the manufacturer's estimate for monthly power is 38kW-hr at an average of 12mph. That last figure is more representative for a fixed installation with good wind, but does give you a figure of 50W power from a 12mph wind.

It's a solid unit, seems well protected from the elements (marine rating), comes with three year warranty, and has worked well in a couple of installations. (We did fixed installations in high salt areas so went for the marine rating.)
