Product Description

The Air-X is the world's #1 selling small wind turbine. The new technology used in the Air-X was only previously found in mega-watt-class wind turbines. The AIR-X uses a new microprocessor based technology that results in an increase in performance, battery charging capability, and reliability. Additionally, flutter noise from the machine has been reduced. Much Lower Noise: Previous AIR wind modules relied on their aero-elastic blade design for protection in high winds. This caused a loud flutter noise in winds above 35 mph (16 m/s). AIR-Xs circuit monitors the wind speed and electronically slows the blades as it reaches its rated output preventing it from going into flutter. This results in a much quieter wind turbine. In high winds, the AIR-X will continue to produce power at a reduced level until the wind decreases, at which point maximum potential output will resume. With the AIR-Xs new design, any size battery bank from 25 to 25,000 amp hours or higher can be charged safely. When the battery has reached its charged state, the AIR-X will slow to an almost complete stop. Only when the battery has dropped below its voltage set point will it restart and resume charging. WHERE AND HOW THE AIR-X WIND MODULE IS USED The AIR-X is an ideal product for the person that needs a little power for basic appliances such as TV, radio and a few lights. Features Unprecedented 3-YEAR WARRANTY, Carbon Fiber Composite Blades Aircraft quality aluminum alloy castings Exclusive brush-less neodynium cubic curve alternator Sophisticated internal battery charge regulator Maintenance-free - Only two moving parts Exclusive Auto-brake-feature that slows the AIR to a silent spin when the batteries are charged thus extending bearing life and reducing noise. Specifications: Rotor Diameter: 46" (1.14 meters) Weight: 13 lbs (6 kg) Start up wind speed: 7 mph (3 m/s) Voltage: 12, 24 or 48VDC Output: 400 watts at 28 mph (12.5 m/s)

Easy installation. Very similar to installing an antenna

Review Date: August 18, 2009
Reviewer: Citizen John, USA
I got this tower kit when I invested in the Sunforce 44447 wind turbine. Installing the tower kit is where the time is compared to installing the actual turbine, but it is really very simple. It is a lot like putting up a field antenna, which I had plenty of practice doing in the Army many years ago. You don't need any special tools. The most specialized tool you need is a socket wrench. The manual is excellent. The following is my experience.

First you secure the base to the ground - that's where the tower will stand. Then you measure where the 4 guideposts will go and drive their anchors into the ground at a 45 degree angle to the base to secure it. Take it easy the first time you drive the anchors into the ground because it's likely you'll have to move them later in the setup as I did. You lay out the pipe sections, slide the guide hangars onto the correct places (they connect to guideposts), run the transmission wire through the pipe, fasten the pipe and secure the pipe to the tower base. The part you don't want to skimp on is raising the tower to make sure the guide wires are ok or if they need to be adjusted. Unless you install wind turbines frequently, they probably need to be adjusted. So you make your adjustments and re-anchor the guideposts, this time driving the anchors all the way in except for the 5 inches that stay above ground. You do all this before attempting to install the turbine.

Finally you make the electrical connection to the turbine and wrap with electrical tape as with every turbine. Then you slide the turbine onto the tower, tighten the bolts, install the blades and raise the tower. You can do all this with 2 people. It is satifying work because you know you're doing a good thing for your property, for your physical security in the event the power grid temporarily goes down, for the environment and possibly for economic gain if you are allowed to sell excess power back into the grid.

With this tower kit you're probably getting the above-mentioned turbine: Sunforce 44447 900W Whisper Wind Turbine

a good book on wind energy integration

Review Date: February 14, 2009
Reviewer: Pedro A. C. Rosas, Olinda, PE Brazil
This book is a collection of very good texts on wind energy covering several problems of the integration of wind energy(power) into the power system. From week grids to large power systems. Some models are presented and a very good revision on wind systems is also presented. I really like the book, and I would say that it is a must have book to those in the wind integration area.
The Best Wind Power Overview I have seen

Review Date: April 6, 2007
Reviewer: W. James D. Easton, Bonita, CA USA
I would compare this to Siegfried Heier's "Grid Integration of Wind Energy Conversion Systems."

On the whole, I think Ackermann's book is more comprehensive, although Heier is more complete on low level engineering. Frankly, I think the titles should be interchanged.

Ackermann is, as far as I am aware, the best single work on the the state of wind power grid integration ca. 2003. Where I was disappointed is that it comes almost exclusively from an engineering perspective. This means that economic/policy considerations such as would be found in Francois Leveque's beautiful little "Transport Pricing of Electricity Networks" are not adequately handled, and the whole issue of prices/costs is somewhat fuzzy throughout.

Perhaps to state it another way, Ackermann's book describes existing regulatory mechanisms rather than discussing the conceptual underpinnings (cost proxies, resource allocation, etc.) needed to think clearly about integrating resources and future policy directions.

Ackermann's book does mention hydrogen as a storage medium and throttling of wind to aid in system stability, but never really addresses the use of dispatchable loads in conjunction with low marginal cost electricity sources as an economic substitute for higher marginal cost peaking plants.

In summary, this is a very good book about "what is," but probably not as good a guide as one might wish to "what will be."

An Absolute Must-Have For Windmill Enthusiasts

Review Date: July 11, 2002
Reviewer: Bruce Boatner, Eagle, Idaho USA
This book contains real practicality, not just empty theory. Talk about "put your money where your mouth is" - Hugh lives on a remote spit of land in Northern Scotland that doesn't even have roads, much less access to the power grid. If necessity is the mother of invention, there's good reason why he was highly motivated to develop the kinds of simple airfoils and low speed alternator combinations that produced real power. This rudimentary experience has taken him all over the world for installations and workshops. I guess having someone like that around makes him a pretty popular guy with his neighbors.

This book covers the theory necessary to understand wind energy basics, and proceeds as a how-to manual on shaping a simple turbine out of wood. It then shows how to build a low speed alternator out of a brake drum. (There is another book by Hugh called "Brake Drum Windmill Handbook" which goes into more detail).

The challenge is building an electrical generating system that operates at the slow rotational speeds of a wind turbine (e.g. 300 - 500 RPM). Everybody wants to hook up an automobile alternator, but even if it is optimized for high output at an idle, it probably will not start producing power until it reaches 1800 RPM. (Typically the engine/alternator pulleys have a ratio of 3 or 3.5 to 1 and the engine idles @ 600 RPM).

A great little book.
